چکیده

A novel method for pinning magnetic domains on pre-formatted pinning sites has been developed for perpendicular magnetic anisotropy magneto-optical (MO) thin film media. The pinning sites were artificial lattices made by patterning a layer of gold grid on the substrate using electron beam lithography. Compared with the work proposed using photolithography, our method showed the ability of making smaller pinning domains. Moreover, compared with our previous work using the same electron beam lithography method and creating hole arrays on polymethyl methacrylate, this new method could stand higher film deposition temperatures and avoid the MO films rapid deterioration on a PMMA substrate. In order to investigate the domain pinning behavior we did several different procedures and observed their corresponding domain pinning layouts. Magnetic domains were found to be pinned inside the lattice and resembled the geometric shapes of the lattice. The pinned domains acquired the shape of the lattice. In this article, the star-shaped type of geometry of grid arrays is presented. ( 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Combined effects of magnetic interaction and domain wall pinning on the coercivity in a bulk Nd60Fe30Al10 ferromagnet

Understanding the coercivity mechanism has a substantial impact on developing novel permanent materials. However, the current coercivity mechanisms used widely in permanent alloys cannot explain well the amorphous phase produced hard magnetic behavior of Nd-based bulk amorphous alloys (BAAs). Here, we propose that the coercivity in as-cast Nd60Fe30Al10 alloy is from the combination of magnetic ...

Thickness-modulated tungsten–carbon superconducting nanostructures grown by focused ion beam induced deposition for vortex pinning up to high magnetic fields

We report efficient vortex pinning in thickness-modulated tungsten-carbon-based (W-C) nanostructures grown by focused ion beam induced deposition (FIBID). By using FIBID, W-C superconducting films have been created with thickness modulation properties exhibiting periodicity from 60 to 140 nm, leading to a strong pinning potential for the vortex lattice. This produces local minima in the resisti...

Perpendicular exchange bias and its control by magnetic, stress and electric fields

Perpendicular exchange bias (PEB) involving perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in both the antiferromagnetic (AF) pinning and the ferromagnetic (FM) sensor layer is expected to become important in future perpendicular recording and sensing devices. Further, because of the reduced spin dimensionality, PEB promises to be easier understandable than the conventional planar exchange bias (EB). ...

Enhanced superconducting vortex pinning with disordered nanomagnetic arrays

We studied the effect of disorder on superconducting vortex pinning produced by arrays of artificial pinning sites. The magnetoresistance of samples with pinning configurations varying from a triangular array to an almost random distribution of pinning sites provides a controlled system for such studies. Interestingly even small degrees of order are sufficient to produce enhanced pinning at wel...

Fast propagation of weakly pinned domain walls and current-assisted magnetization reversal in He+-irradiated Pt/Co/Pt nanotracks

Magnetic-domain-wall propagation is experimentally studied in nanotracks etched in ultrathin Pt/Co/Pt films with out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy, where pinning has been artificially reduced by low-dose He-irradiation. Fast domainwall propagation is demonstrated in such tracks under low magnetic fields, not greater than the fields necessary to make a domain wall propagate in the He-irradiated p...
